WELL. It could have been much, much worse (and, it has to be said, a lot, lot
better). The man with the longest chin since the Child-catcher in Chitty Chitty
Bang Bang at least shows signs of inching towards a future musical maturity, if
by that stated aim he meant a career as Mick Hucknall's understudy. Once the
singles are out of the way, things settle down into a serviceable smooch-fest
of bossa nova, Spanish guitar, tailor-made Bacharach and mass-production Cathy
Dennis. The voice is a callow thing, often aiming too high or too far for its
limitations to keep up with. But From Now On isn't the stinker it might have
been. Which isn't to say it doesn't whiff a bit. DC
