POP Idol star Will Young last night made an emotional TV
plea to missing Milly Dowler.
Minutes before going on stage at a sell-out show, the
schoolgirl’s singing hero said in his appeal on ITN: “Milly, you’re not in
trouble.
“Your friends and family love you very much. You are
greatly missed. If you’re watching, please simply call a friend or any family
member to let them know you are safe.”
Holding up a poster picturing 13-year-old Milly, he added:
“We are appealing to anyone with any information. No matter how trivial you may
think it is, it may make all the difference. The number to call is 01372
471212.”
Will, 23, then joined runner-up Gareth Gates and the rest
of the Pop Idol line-up on stage at the 12,000-seat Sheffield Arena. Milly saw
the tour in London two days before she vanished.
A Surrey Police spokeswoman said: “Milly is a huge Will
fan. We asked him if he would make an appeal and he agreed straightaway. We are
extremely grateful.”
Yesterday detectives probed dozens of leads sparked by
over 250 calls to BBC TV’s Crimewatch on Thursday night.
It reconstructed Milly’s last steps after she got off a
train with school pals in her home town of Walton-on-Thames nine days ago.
Supt Alan Sharp, leading the hunt, said: “We are
extremely pleased we have received so many calls, many of them significant.”
One witness told cops he had seen a middle-aged man acting
suspiciously in a car near the station on the day she went missing — and the
day before.
Yesterday 15 police officers continued combing the
family’s four-bedroom house.
They downloaded emails from a computer, but say nothing
found so far indicates she had secret friends.
