Ronan Keating Say 'Pop Idol is glorified karaoke'

Ronan Keating has attacked the winners of Pop Idol and Popstars, calling them "glorified karaoke".

He says the idea of creating a band on a television series is "weird".

The former Boyzone singer adds that he is concerned by the way Will Young and Gareth Gates have been marketed.

He told the Sunday Mirror: "If I were them I'd be wary. I think they are surrounded by people who are pushing the whole marketing campaign rather than actually nurturing the artist.

"I mean, why would they want to bring Gareth's record out off the back of Will's?

"The same record company and the same management team - why would they want to do that?

"It's fine for them because they reap the rewards either way but not for the artist - that's not nice and it wasn't nice on Will."

Ronan says the saving grace is that Will and Gareth can sing.

"They have great voices, they are talented guys, they look like they want it and they seem like good people which is great," he said.

"I wish them the best. I hope they crack it, I hope they make millions of albums, I hope they tour the world and make a lot of people happy, surround themselves with good people and trust the people they can trust."
