Will Young has revealed that, during the final weeks of
Pop Idol, he'd given up hope of winning the competition altogether, believing
his 17-year-old rival, Gareth Gates, would walk away with the title.
Speaking to OK! magazine, the smiley 23-year-old Pop Idol
winner admitted he'd thought his number was well and truly up when he heard
that he, Darius Danesh and Gareth were each to record Evergreen, a Westlife
cover.
"It was a hard time for me," Will
confessed, explaining, "There had been all these polls and stories in
the papers claiming Gareth was the outright winner. Things just got a bit much
for me. I think I got sucked into the hype that he would would win and that it
was all decided. I even had friends cal me and say: 'Gareth Is going to win.'
So when we were asked along to the the recording studio to record Evergreen and
I heard it was a Westlife cover, it really hit me. I just thought, this is a
song he would sing - not me."
However, since he was voted Pop Idol during February, it's
emerged that, despite rumours to the contrary, Will actually led the show's
weekly polls, leaving Gareth trailing in second place for many weeks.
Will, who's currently working on his debut album, has just
released his second single, Light My Fire.
